Apprentice Case Study – Tony Gange, 38
We caught up for a conversation with Tony, who joined A+J Ryan straight from school. See our questions and answers session where Tony gives us an insight into his Apprenticeship and successful career:
Education (Place/s and did you leave with any qualifications): C in art and a few E’s & F’s, nothing special.
What were your options after school? It was to go to college and learn a trade, that was my only option really.
How and when did you join A+J Ryan (advert, introduction by friend, from college?): Through college work experience and got placed with AJR.
What was your first role?: Labouring / apprentice as I was studying at college
What training was provided?: Doing NVQ one day at college then working for the other time as apprentice at AJR
Did you have any role models within the business, did anybody drive you on?: I was placed with an experienced plumber & supervisor and spent a lot of time working closely with them to learn the trade. Picked up a vast knowledge of all aspects of plumbing due to the time spent with people who knew everything.
How has your career progressed at A+J Ryan (different roles, current role?): I ended up working my way up after qualifying as a plumber to a supervisor on smaller jobs with maybe a senior manager on site to then running my own sites bigger sites as a site manager.
What do you enjoy most about your job?: Every day you face a different challenge, so it always keeps your brain going and never a dull day. It’s also nice to see someone start as a fresh apprentice who don’t know much to being on site with them after they have their qualifications and seeing how much they’ve grown and learnt.
What are the biggest changes you have seen within the construction industry (processes, people, equipment)?: Health & safety is way more involved for the better now and site welfare facilities have drastically improved to make site life better. Record keeping needs to be much better now and it’s driven from the client as well as us the sub-contractor as now the culture is that everything is to be recorded as back in the days this wasn’t the case.
What advice would you give to anybody leaving school / college now?: To learn a trade and get your qualifications and make sure it’s something you are passionate about as most people come into plumbing just for the money but it’s tough on site and if you don’t have passion for what you do, you won’t enjoy it and it can be really rewarding.
